Elected officials need to show more respect

Dear Editor, I attended the City Council Hearing on Tuesday evening regarding a property tax and although I did not speak, many senior citizens and business owners spoke out against the tax. These are not wealthy people, these are people just barely getting by on their income. And personally,  I do not believe that the 5000+ people that live in Moab have ruined the streets, it is the one million visitors that ruined Kane Creek Boulevard, the street behind City Market, and many other streets in town.

I am so disheartened by the attitude of the City Council, which I would describe as “callous and uncaring.” I do not understand why you cannot compromise on this issue and listen to the people who live here day in and day out. We are all trying to live on less money because our bills have all gone up. Senior citizens who paid less than $100,000 for a home years ago are being assessed based on a house that is now worth over $500,000 due to the over-evaluations of properties in Moab. In addition, many homes were damaged by the recent storms and folks are having to make repairs to their property.

There were some good suggestions made at the meeting and I think the Council should look at the budget again and find ways to save money like everyone else. I strongly encourage the City Council to reduce the percentage of property tax that they have already decided upon.

Last, I was appalled that anyone would interrupt a ninety-one year old senior citizen who was trying to speak even though she was clearly upset. The effort this citizen made to get to the meeting in 100 plus degree heat was amazing and commendable. We would be wise to listen to folks who have been around for ninety plus years without interrupting them. Please show some respect for your constituents.
