In memory of James Delbert Cowan

July 7, 1950 – June 6, 2024

James Delbert Cowan was born July 7, 1950, to Charles (Sleepy) Gaskin Cowan and Reba Adams Cowan in Kenilworth, Utah.

 Jim is preceded in death by his mother and father; his stepfather, J.C. Stewart; his sister, Gladys Cowan Wells (Dennis Wells Sr.); and his brother, John Cowan of Moab.  

He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Cowan Hayes (Mike) and Donna Cowan Day (Joe); his brothers, Jeff Cowan (Elaina) and Jerry Cowan (Happy); his half-sister, JoAnn Stewart Ansel; his three children, Marjorie E. Cowan, Michael J. Cowan and Clay C. Cowan; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Jim also has numerous surviving step-brothers: Redd (Candace) Stewart of Las Vegas; Doug (Vicki) Stewart, St. George, Utah; Jack (Linda) Stewart, Winnemucca, Nevada; Jerry (Elaine) Stewart, Cheyenne, Wyoming; Ernie (Betsie) Jensen, Grand Junction, Colorado.

We are so thankful and blessed for his wonderful and faithful friends and all the love and support they have shown us over the years. Ron Dolphin (Mel) and Frank Melo: You are truly men of honor!

Jim graduated from Grand County High School. Jim loved football! He also enjoyed the outdoors, hiking the La Sal Mountains on foot during hunting season, fishing in lakes and streams, or boating on Lake Powell and Flaming Gorge. He was passionate about coaching football, baseball and wrestling. He was competitive in everything he enjoyed and won many drilling competitions with his brother, Jerry. He served in the Army and is a Vietnam Vet. He was very proud of his family and was very proud of his grandchildren. He had an impeccable work ethic. 

He was a loving and devoted grandfather to all those who called him Papa. Being a grandfather was one of Jim’s favorite lifetime events. His memory will be treasured by all who knew him.
