Meow and hello everyone. It’s Cosmo the library cat, here with some exciting news from the world of art. Grand County Public Library is showcasing a new art exhibit titled: “She Started It!”
Thanks to the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, this exhibit features winners from an art contest presented by Better Days, a nonprofit organization dedicated to elevating women’s voices from the past and present, and the Utah Women’s History Initiative at the Utah Historical Society.
Students in grades 4 through 12 from around the state were challenged to create art depicting women in Utah history who made a difference in their communities and who have inspired the artists themselves.
When our exhibits feature artwork from young people, I am always so delighted by the creativity and talent on display. Of course, it’s fun to look at these masterpieces, but I also enjoy reading why the artists chose them. Women have played such an important part in history (Hi, Grandma!), but we don’t often hear about their contributions.
The women depicted in the exhibit include Indigenous leaders, historical figures, and contemporary women these young artists find inspirational. One sweet piece features one of Moab’s beloved healthcare providers and was created by one of the librarian’s favorite local talents (you’ll have to come to see for yourself!), and you’ll surely recognize and be inspired by other luminaries depicted by our creative youngsters.
The exhibit at the library will be part of the Moab Art Walk on Friday, May 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. In the meantime, you can stop by the library anytime until June 4 to admire this exhibit and see why we’re all glad that “She Started It!”
