Open burn period begins March 1

Open burning in Grand County is regulated by specific guidelines and timeframes. From March 1 to May 31 and November 1 to 30, burning is permitted after notifying the Grand County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at 435-259-8115. Materials like dry clippings, bushes, and pruning from property maintenance are allowed, but burning of tires, oils, trash, and certain other items is strictly prohibited. Burning must be at least 50 feet away from structures, with a responsible person present at all times to monitor and extinguish the fire. Adequate measures should be taken to prevent the fire from spreading, and neighboring residents must be notified if there’s any potential risk.

Odd but True

Messed with the wrong hiker

A hiker in Johnston, Rhode Island, defended himself against a rabid coyote attack by strangling the animal with his bare hands, prompting tests that confirmed the coyote’s rabies infection. According to authorities, the hiker subdued the coyote after being bitten on the leg, pinning it down and cutting off its air supply. Another attack on a dog walker in Scituate is attributed to the same coyote. Such attacks are rare, with only three reported rabid coyotes in RI since 1994. Previously, in New Hampshire in 2020, a man similarly killed a coyote with his hands after an attack on his family, though the rabies test results from that incident were inconclusive.
