A pickup truck full of flowers for Valentine’s Day- Moab local brings fresh floral arrangements to residents

The new storefront of Baker’s Blooms, nestled snugly beside Geezer’s Meat on the south side of Moab, exudes warmth like a cozy, welcoming cabin. Inside, Edye Baker has her hands full with her new business—and with a fist full of roses waiting to be rushed across town for Valentine’s Day.

Baker started her floral arrangement business, Baker’s Blooms, on a small scale last Valentine’s Day, asking friends and family if they’d like flowers for the holiday. She had such a strong response that, little by little, she began building a reputation and also building her entrepreneurial chops.

“There is so much that goes into this. I’ve had so much support from the Women’s Business Center and the community,” she said. “Without that, I’d be overwhelmed. I’d say that my business this Valentine’s Day is over five times what it was last year.”

Baker first thought of using her creative flair to run a business when Moab’s only brick-and-mortar floral shop closed a few years ago.

“It’s been something that I imagined I’d do when I retired, run a cute little flower shop,” she said, “but I saw an opportunity to offer something high quality to locals at a fair price and live the dream now.”

Baker herself is a Moab native and has deep roots in the community, knowing many of the people on her delivery list by their first name.

“I was a tomboy raised by cowboys,” Baker laughed. “But I’ve always loved flowers. My mom always had cut flowers on the table at home.”

“It’s a whole other thing to run the shop,” she said, commenting that she’s had friends come by to help dethorn roses and prepare flowers and greenery. “There’s a lot of preparation and labor that just goes into preparing the flower stems, and I’m working hard to keep everything reasonably priced to honor everyone that is supporting the shop.”

This year, Baker is working hard to source flowers from Moab growers like Farmyard Moab to be able to offer special local arrangements in addition to conventionally sourced stems.

“I think people, especially here, want and value something locally grown and sustainable even if it costs a little bit more. I’m always trying to think of ways to minimize waste as well,” she said, mentioning that she offers a discount for customers who bring their own vases.

On cue, a woman pops into the shop to offer a few vases to add to the collection of quirky vessels for the shop. A man drops by to check the store out, before purchasing one beautiful stem of lilies that Baker picks out special for his wife.

As Baker finishes the Valentine’s Day bouquet, a young employee patiently waits for her to finish arranging a ribbon around the arrangement just so before hopping into a car to deliver it directly to a woman’s home.

In a town often bustling with tourists and travelers, where personal connections can feel fleeting, Baker’s Blooms feels like a beacon of intimacy.

“I’ve always wanted to do something creative, and it’s so amazing to be able to do that here in Moab, right where I’m from,” Baker said.

Baker’s Blooms offers arrangements off the shelf at their cozy storefront adjacent to Geezer’s Meat, in addition to custom orders, wedding and event arrangements, and a flower subscription service. Subscriptions starting at $30 can be arranged in multiple sizes on a monthly, biweekly, or weekly schedule for homes or businesses.
