Meow and hello everyone. It’s Cosmo the library cat here to invite you all to an exciting event we’re having soon, “An Evening with Brian Young.” This author talk will take place Monday, September 18 at 6:00 pm at the Grand County Public Library, and is a literacy initiative by the Utah State Library in partnership with Arts & Museums and the Division of Indian Affairs.
Brian Young is a filmmaker and author. He is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation and grew up in Fort Defiance, Arizona, on the Navajo reservation. His first novel, “Healer of the Water Monster,” and its companion novel, “Heroes of the Water Monster,” combine Navajo mythology and culture, family relationships, and adventure in a contemporary setting. The books are geared towards readers ages 8 to 12, but I think they speak to readers of all ages! (Confidentially, I can tell you I’ve seen more than one adult librarian giving these a read.)
Young’s debut novel “Healer of the Water Monster,” was an American Indian Youth Literature Award Winner for Best Middle Grade Book, it was on the American Library Association’s list for Notable Books in 2022, and on the Bank Street College of Education’s list of best children’s books of the year in 2022. You can check out “Healer of the Water Monster” and “Heroes of the Water Monster” in regular and audiobook format from the children’s room. It’s not every day that we are visited by an award-winning author! We hope you will join us!
