Local “Fit to Hike” group forms on Instagram to encourage folks to head outside
Moab is a world-famous destination for all varieties of outdoor pursuits, from mountain biking to climbing to hiking. But getting outdoors here can be intimidating for many who don’t have an extreme level of fitness or athleticism. That’s why one group formed on social media is encouraging people of all ages and abilities to make friendships and join group hikes locally.
The Fit to Hike groups on Facebook and Instagram invite people on short-notice, casual hikes in the Moab area. Local Taralyn Cutting formed the group because she felt the need for a greater sense of community.
“I’ve been focusing on getting more active and physically fit,” Cutting said. “Originally, I was thinking of making an outdoors group geared towards that.”
Cutting said that the response from all sorts of people who were interested in building community and taking hikes together prompted her to open the group up more generally.
“It’s a beginner group,” Cutting said. “When people like to hike or are interested in getting outdoors, they don’t want to go alone.”
The group is welcoming to all ages, Cutting said. “We’ve had a new mom with a 1-month-old join us, all the way up to 65 [years of age].”
One of the benefits of the group is that it provides women with an opportunity to hike in a safe and supportive environment. Cutting said that she is always mindful of the safety of the group, and she chooses trails that are appropriate for beginners.
“It’s great for women to be with other women, and we’ve had a couple of guys hike with us as well,” said Cutting.
The location and length of the hikes vary and are posted on the Fit to Hike Facebook and Instagram accounts. Cutting currently chooses most hikes, but is looking for more people to volunteer to choose and lead hikes on their own.
Most hikes planned are “short and sweet with beautiful views,” said Cutting, who said that the Pipe Dream trail running along the rim close to town is a current favorite.
“You know exactly how long it’s going to take, so no one has to worry,” she said. “It’s a great trail for our group.”
Locals or visitors who would like to join or lead a hike can join either the Facebook or Instagram group for updates.
“I’m so happy that people are interested,” Cutting said. “I just put fliers out one day and hoped for the best!”
