Three Moab City Council seats will be up for election this November: the seats currently occupied by Rani Derasary, Kalen Jones, and Tawny Knuteson-Boyd are up for re-election; all were elected to the council in 2015 and again in 2019.

Elected candidates will join Luke Wojciechowski and Jason Taylor as councilmembers. Terms last for four years; all city elected offices are at-large and non-partisan. Those elected to fill the open positions will be sworn in and take office on Jan. 2, 2024.

Moab residents interested in running for city council must file a declaration of candidacy during the first full week of June—Thursday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 7, excluding Saturday and Sunday.

Declarations of candidacy must be filed in person with Sommar Johnson, the Moab City Recorder. The recorder’s office is open Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to noon (though candidates can arrange to file on Friday after 12 p.m. by calling 435-259-2683 to schedule an appointment), and Monday through Wednesday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to a City of Moab press release, if necessary, there will be a primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 15 to narrow the field to six candidates.

All candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen at the time of filing.
  • Registered voter in the municipality for at least 30 days prior to the date of the election. (Registered voter requirements can be found in Utah Code 20A-2-101 & 104).
  • Resident of Moab City for at least one year prior to the date of the election.

Candidacy forms and more information are available at moabcity.org/Elections or by calling the recorder’s office at 435-259-2683. This election will be conducted by mail.
