Cosmo’s Corner: Wild Rivers Film Tour

Cosmo is photoshopped onto a paddleboard on the Colorado River.

Meow and hello, Moab! It’s Cosmo, library cat and aspiring film director. Let me set the scene:  It’s Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. The Center Street Ballfields are filling up with people setting up chairs and blankets on the grass in front of a giant, inflatable movie screen. Librarians bustle about, engaged in some sort of preparations. In the background, people chat about rivers and river conservation. Our star (that’s you!) enters from left, crossing the field. The camera pans across the field and follows you to your seat as you settle in for the free Moab screening of the Wild Rivers Film Tour. And CUT!

My directorial debut may be all in my imagination, but the Wild Rivers Film Tour is real and you’re invited! The Grand County Public Library is co-hosting this event with American Rivers, a nonprofit that aims to preserve and protect healthy rivers. The film festival features 8 short films that explore humans’ connections to wild rivers and promote conservation (and fun!).

The ballfields are part of my regular patrols outside the library building, and I can verify that the nighttime conditions are perfect for outdoor movie watching. It may be a little cooler than our last outdoor movie, so come prepared. I’ve always been impressed by how humans stay cozy at these events. They don’t let their inability to grow a luxurious fur coat stop them from having a nice evening outside! In addition to chairs and blankets, I’ve seen little kids curled up in sleeping bags, even folks with picnics. In case it is rainy, the movie will be shown across the street inside the library’s large meeting room.

Those details again: Wednesday, Oct. 12, film starts at 7:30-ish. Come at 7:00 p.m. to mingle with other river enthusiasts. No RSVP necessary and this event is free!
