Reward offered in Big Bend Boulders vandalism

The Bureau of Land Management is offering $1,000 in reward money for info leading to the culprits behind greasing handholds at the Big Bend Bouldering Area, upstream of the Big Bend Campground along the Colorado River and State Route 128.

On Feb. 14, the BLM received reports that “petroleum-based grease was smeared on the climbing handholds” at the popular recreation area. The Friends of Indian Creek advocacy organization reported that organized cleaning efforts are underway and asked that climbers avoid the faces affected, as they are suffused with water from cleaning and vulnerable to damage.

“It is up to each of us to help keep public lands safe and clean for future generations,” said BLM Moab Field Manager Nicollee Gaddis-Wyatt. “When incidents occur, we appreciate the public’s help in reporting information to the BLM’s law enforcement team.”

Anyone with information about this investigation can call the BLM tip line at 435-259-2131. Callers may remain anonymous.
