The holidays are just around the corner and Desert Sun Ceramics is holding an Outdoor Holiday Pottery Sale event where shoppers can find unique, beautiful and functional items made by local potters. The sale will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m until 4 p.m. at the Desert Sun Ceramics studio (1320 Highway 191, Moab). Masks and social distancing are required.
Studio owner Liz Ford said there will be a variety of pottery for sale, mostly functional but also some ornamental and sculptural pieces.
Items for sale include pieces made by Joanne Savoie (lidded jars, bowls, plates, salt and pepper shakers, planters); Liz Ford (bowls, mugs, soap dishes, goblets, teapots); Emma Andrew (mugs, bowls, bolo ties); Reid Saunders (ornaments, bowls, cups); Samantha Derbyshire (candles, mugs); Jenny Shohand (planters, mugs); Jenny Flannery (lidded pots, pinch pots); Patrice Mason (pinch pots); Lauren Reed (mugs, ornaments); Sue Booker (mugs, bowls, cruets) and decorative works by Karen Chatham.
“I think it’s really important to support our local artists,” Ford said. “It’s good to shop locally and support local businesses.”
Ford noted that holiday shopping opportunities, including craft fairs, are limited due to the ongoing pandemic, and part of the motivation for holding this sale outdoors was to give locals an opportunity to shop in a safer environment.
She added that the upcoming holiday sale will be the first time some potters have ever sold their works, while others are more seasoned and have been putting their works out into the world for years.
“It’s really encouraging to those budding potters for people to come, buy their pottery and appreciate it,” she said.
Desert Sun Ceramics is also taking reservations for a class series to be held in the studio next month in which children and their parents or guardians will be guided through the creation of a ceramic gingerbread house that will light up. The series of classes will take place on Dec. 5 and 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Dec. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. The cost is $120.
The class instructor is Karen Chatham. She said the ceramic gingerbread houses will look like the edible ones, but will last from year to year. She advised that groups plan to pair one or two children per adult.
Ford called making gingerbread houses a “time-honored tradition” and said she hoped that making the house together will also make good memories for the participants and the house can become a treasured keepsake.
