The Grand County High School boys and girls basketball teams each continued their Region 12 woes, going winless for the week and pushing their combined region records to 0-16, following lopsided losses to Carbon, Richfield, South Sevier and San Juan.
The boys played Carbon on Jan. 29 in Moab, losing 79-61 after the Dinos built a 20-point first quarter lead the Red Devils couldn’t overcome. Kaine Allred had 21 points and nine rebounds, joined in the double digits by Luke Williams (12 points), Milo Birdwell (10 points) and Eli Hazlett (10 points).
After the Carbon game, the Red Devils hit the road where they lost 65-48 at South Sevier on Jan. 31. Another slow first quarter put the Red Devils at a disadvantage 20-10, which they cut to 29-27 by halftime. The Rams hit the gas in the third quarter, however, outscoring GCHS 21-4 to put the game away. Birdwell had 12 points, while Williams and Ryelan Jones each had nine.
Saturday, the Red Devils were overpowered by No. 4 Richfield 69-43, scoring only 13 points in the first half. Allred had more than half of GCHS’s points (24), while Josh Thalman had 33 points for the Wildcats.
The Lady Red Devils had similar fortunes on the home floor, falling 76-23 versus South Sevier on Friday night, and 72-24 to Richfield on Saturday afternoon. Versus the Rams, Josalyn Murphy and Tenney Cook each scored eight points, while Megan Zunich had six points and five rebounds. Against Richfield, Cook scored nine points and Zunich had six in a game the Lady Red Devils went scoreless in the second quarter.
