Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center offers tips to survive

Last winter, four people died in avalanches in Utah, including one in Moab’s La

Sal Mountains. Learning about avalanches is imperative for winter recreationists including snowmobilers and backcountry skiers.

The U.S Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center will host a free avalanche awareness presentation featuring the award-winning short film “Know Before You Go” on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Grand County Public Library. The one-hour presentation will instruct winter backcountry recreationists in the basics of avalanche safety including how to recognize avalanche terrain, and how weather and snowpack contribute to avalanche danger. Basic rescue and necessary equipment will also be discussed. A slideshow and question and answer session will follow the film. Call the Moab Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal National Forest at 435-259-7155 or email avalanche forecaster Eric Trenbeath (eric@utahavalanchecenter.org) for more information.
