A clothing giveaway may interest the parents while their youngsters will likely enjoy going trunk to trunk – as in vehicle trunks – to collect candy, and other goodies – during the fifth annual Halloween Trunk or Treat on Thursday, Oct. 31
The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Old Spanish Trail Arena. Last year, 2,200 children attended and organizers expect more children this year. Trunk or Treat is open to all ages.
“Each year it’s bigger,” said Sherilyn Sowell, the administrative director of the Grand County Family Support Center at the Christmas Box House. “Kids go car to car, instead of house to house.”
The Grand County Family Support Center at the Christmas Box House sponsors the Trunk or Treat event each year.
The event draws not only cars and trucks, but also tractors, loaders, and a fire engine.
“Some people really go all out to decorate their trunks,” Sowell said.
You don’t have to enter a car or truck to participate, however. Sowell said people also come and set up lawn chairs in which to hang out and hand out sweets.
Candy must be individually wrapped and store-bought, and Sowell encourages participants to consider non-candy items to distribute, as well.
Those who would like to support the event and offer treats to children should register their vehicles in advance, so organizers will know how many vehicles to expect, said Sowell. Vehicles must arrive by 3 p.m.
In addition to trick or treating, Classic Air Medical plans to create a Haunted House for the event. And Moab Giants, a Moab dinosaur museum, will add a surprise, as well, Sowell said.
The Rotary Club of Moab has been busy collecting clothing to give away during the Halloween event.
“We will have tables with our Rotary sign and labels,” designating genders and sizes of clothing,
said Britta Kingsley, President of the Rotary Club of Moab. “People can take what they like.”
The Family Support Center and Christmas Box House serve children and families in crisis in Grand and San Juan counties. The center provides temporary shelter while foster care is found for children who have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.
