A person allegedly attempting to commit suicide simultaneously started a fire in a home, police report.
The Moab City Police Department said the Grand County Dispatch received a 911 call on June 13 at about 8:30 p.m. from a caller concerned about a relative.
Law enforcement officers with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Moab City Police Department responded to a home at Grand Oasis manufactured home community, 400 N. 500 West, and found a suicidal subject and flames inside the home. Members of the Moab Valley Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire.
The person was safely removed from the residence, police said, and treated by Grand County Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Police said that due to the injuries sustained during the incident, the person was transferred to Moab Regional Hospital for additional care.
The incident is being investigated as arson by detectives with the Moab City Police Department. No further information was released by the department. A family member of the person spoke to the Moab Sun News and said she was “very grateful for all of the agencies involved.”
“I can sometimes feel the mental eye rolls when we have to involve the police,” she said, “but they are always professional, and I’m very grateful for that.”
She said that they are working together as a family to help the person recover.
“We just ask for prayers and privacy,” she said.
