Mother of American modernism Georgia O’Keeffe once said, “Filling a space in a beautiful way — that is what art means to me.”
The city of Moab, by Georgia O’Keeffe’s definition, is art. Moab’s beauty is observed through pastels, acrylics, watercolors, photography and sculpture at special events like the Moab ArtWalk, which will be on Saturday, May 11. There will be 10 ArtWalk venues open throughout downtown Moab from 5 to 8 p.m.
“It’s always great to check out ArtWalk and see how much talent is in Moab,” said Moab resident Kara Dohrenwend, who enjoys visiting the ArtWalk venues. Moab ArtWalk takes place each on the second Saturday of each month through November.
For May’s Moab ArtWalk, local and regional artists will have their artworks on display at Moab Printworks, WabiSabi, Moab Museum, Grand County Public Library, Moab Arts and Recreation Center, Moonflower Community Cooperative, Moab Made, Tom Till Gallery, Gallery Moab and Rukkus Studio.
ArtWalk has grown from humble beginnings to become a must-see event for locals and visitors alike.
There is no order in which of the ten ArtWalk venues you should visit first, and each has unique creations to view. ArtWalk visitors can enter each of the venues freely on a come-and-go basis. The event is open to the public and no tickets are required.
You can stop by the Moab Arts and Recreation Center (MARC), 111 E. 100 North, to see emerging artist Elly Mardith.
Mardith will be displaying her realism drawings and doing live demonstrations of henna tattooing throughout the evening.
Moab artist Bitsy Tatera will be showing her latest installation at the MARC. Tatera’s installation explores the power and elegance of identifying beauty in a place where it might not typically be found.
There will also be tarot readings available at the MARC during May’s ArtWalk.
Artist Greg MacDonald is returning to ArtWalk venue Moonflower Community Cooperative, 39 E. 100 North, with all new work.
MacDonald’s creative artwork might have you guessing which animal is morphing into another creature.
Moonflower Community Cooperative manager Derek Whitworth said MacDonald’s artwork is “different” than other artworks that have been displayed at the store. MacDonald’s work is, in fact, different: he uses a lot of birds and animals, and a bit of whimsy, during his watercolor process.
Local photographer Tom Till is excited about his latest global adventures and will be showing the images he has captured at his Main Street gallery, 61 N. Main St.
Till said that for the May 11 show he has new additions from his travels to Spain and the Grand Canyon in the past year. He has continued to capture the beauty of our home around Moab and has new images of the Milky Way.
