Grand County High School seniors Joopy Bamrungmuang and Jamie Day both finished in the top 10 in Region 15 golf competition at The Hideout in Monticello on Monday, April 15, where juggernaut Richfield added to its insurmountable lead with two tournaments left in region play.
Bamrungmuang shot an 82 for third place, while Day shot an 88 for eighth. Richfield, however, took each of the other six spots in the top eight and sits at 2,001 strokes with the Grand County High School (GCHS) Lady Red Devils in a distant second with 2,440. Manti is in third at 2,544.
GCHS was scheduled to play at Round Valley on Tuesday, April 23, the same venue where the state tournament is set to take place on May 7-8. The Region 15 final will take place on Monday, April 29, at the Carbon Country Club.
Three of GCHS’ other five spring sports teams play at home for the final times this year in the coming week.
After a road match versus Emery on Tuesday, April 23, the boys soccer team is the first GCHS team to have its home finale this week, versus Manti on Thursday, April 25, at 4 p.m. With a 7-0-1 record in region play, if the GCHS Red Devils come away with at least a tie in either game, they clinch the Region 15 title.
The GCHS baseball team is in the opposite situation facing its final four games of the regular season. The GCHS Red Devils sit dead last at 0-8 in Region 15 play and need to surpass either 1-7 North Sanpete, or 3-7 San Juan, to make the state playoffs. As luck would have it, the Red Devils play North Sanpete in a double header in Moab on Friday, April 26, at 2 and 4 p.m., before finishing the regular season in Blanding versus San Juan in a double header on Tuesday, April 30, at 2 and 4 p.m.
The GCHS boys tennis team also has its final home action on Friday, April 26, playing North Sanpete at 10:30 a.m., and Manti at 3:30 p.m. Before that, the Red Devils host Richfield at 10:30 a.m., and South Sevier at 3:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 25. GCHS was scheduled to play at San Juan on Tuesday, April 23.
The softball team has a second-place 9-2 record in Region 15 play with one game left on the schedule — a road game versus San Juan on Tuesday, April 23. Although they don’t have any control over their own destiny, the GCHS Lady Red Devils still have a chance of surpassing 9-1 Manti for the Region title. The GCHS softball team is scheduled to play at a tournament in Logan on Saturday, April 27, to conclude the regular season.
The GCHS track and field team is also in action this weekend as the athletes head to Blanding for the Eastern Utah Championships on Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m.
