Red Devils fall to Richfield, South Sevier

The Grand County High School girls basketball team suffered a pair of lopsided defeats against top teams from Region 15, falling 63-24 at Richfield on Friday, Feb. 1, then 74-43 at South Sevier on Saturday, Feb. 2. With the losses, Grand County High School (GCHS) fell to 2-8 in Region 15 play, 7-12 overall, tied for fifth with North Sanpete (3-16, 2-8) with two games remaining.

In the Lady Red Devils’ game versus Richfield, the Lady Wildcats steamrolled GCHS, holding them to only eight points in the first half. The Lady Red Devils shot just 23 percent and turned the ball over 18 times. Senior Hannah Owen scored 10 points, while senior Veda Gritts had eight.

Against South Sevier, Owen had just one field goal in the contest, using 5-of-6 free throw shooting to amass seven points total. As a team, GCHS shot 17-of-22 from the free throw line. Gritts, who scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, shot 7-of-8 from the line. Senior Mercedes Zunich scored nine points for the Lady Red Devils.

The Lady Red Devils have two games remaining, one of which was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5, at undefeated Emery (19-0, 10-0 Region 15), with the regular season finale set for Friday, Feb. 8, at home versus San Juan (10-9, 5-5). The playoffs, which begin Feb. 15 at Orem High School, remain in question for the Lady Red Devils, who may be subject to tiebreakers with either North Sanpete, Manti (5-15, 1-9) or both, depending on the outcomes of the remaining games. Manti plays host to North Sanpete on Thursday, Feb. 7.
