The Grand County High School volleyball and girls tennis teams each went 1-1 in competition last week, while the girls soccer team suffered back-to-back 5-1 losses.
The Lady Red Devils hosted Emery in their first Devils’ Den action of 2018, losing in three straight sets, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-23 against the Lady Spartans.
Two days later against Richfield on Thursday, Aug. 30, Grand bounced back, winning three of four sets to take the match.
The Lady Red Devils continue their home stand against Monticello on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m., before taking to the road at Manti at 5:30 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 7, and at North Sanpete on Saturday, Sept. 8, with a 1 p.m. start time for the sophomore match and junior varsity and varsity immediately to follow. Grand also plays at San Juan on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
The girls tennis team played a morning match at Richfield and an afternoon match at South Sevier on Thursday, Aug. 30, losing 5-0 to the Wildcats and winning 3-2 over the Rams, against whom they mixed up their rotation.
Against Richfield, Jamie Day lost in straight sets in No. 1 singles; Maara Holyoak lost in three sets in No. 2 singles; Kiersten Kimmerle lost in three sets in No. 3 singles; Biw Thanutchaya and Kyla Jackman lost in straight sets in No. 1 doubles; and Jenny Kopell and Chloe Talbot lost in straight sets in No. 2 doubles.
Against the Rams, only No. 2 doubles remained the same competitors with Kopell and Talbot taking another straight set loss. Thanutchaya won No. 1 singles in straight sets, as did Kimmerle in No. 2 singles and Jackman in No. 3 singles.
Day and Holyoak lost a tough match in three sets in No. 1 doubles, losing the first set 6-7 (5-7 tiebreaker), winning the second set 6-1 and losing the third set 5-7.
The girls tennis team returns home to play North Sanpete on Friday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m., before hosting tournament play the following day, beginning at 8 a.m.
In girls soccer, the Lady Red Devils lost at home versus Richfield on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and away against Emery on Thursday, Aug. 30, both via 5-1 score. Kyha Gritts scored against the Lady Wildcats, and Corah Moody scored against the Lady Spartans.
Grand next plays at North Sanpete on Thursday, Sept. 6, and at Manti on Tuesday, Sept. 11, with both matches beginning at 4 p.m.
