Dear Editor:
I am disillusioned by the actions of ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). We should remember that, excepting Native Americans, we are all immigrants.
Diversity is America’s strength. We must stand up to the ugliness of racism, misogyny and xenophobia. We should heed the words of pastor Martin Niemöller, who many years ago said about the Nazis:
“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.”
We all need to speak out now.
