The Grand County High School boys golf team won in Region 15 Competition at Cove View in Richfield on Wednesday, Aug. 15, overcoming host Richfield by five strokes with a 312.
Sophomore Jaxen Saunders shot a 75, while junior Luke Williams shot a 77, junior Kane Scherer shot a 78 and senior Nolan Ramirez shot an 82. Following Richfield’s 317, Manti shot 337 for third place, Emery shot 350 for fourth place, South Sevier shot 351, North Sanpete shot 357 and San Juan shot 368. Grand next competes at the Hideout in Monticello on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m.
The football team, suffering from a shortage in players prior to taking the field, only got more short-handed as they were trounced 42-6 at Morgan on Friday, Aug. 17.
The Red Devils only have about 32 players and were missing several top players for the game. Sophomore Dante Wells started at quarterback, but was taken out with a shoulder injury in the first half. Grand couldn’t muster much offense against the Trojans, falling behind 28-0 by halftime. The Trojans activated the mercy rule early in the third quarter by going up 35-0 before the Red Devils’ Jimmie Johnson broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run.
The Red Devils are in home action in four sports this week, as the girls soccer team plays Richfield on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m.; the girls tennis team plays Manti on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m.; the volleyball team plays Emery on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and Richfield on Thursday, Aug. 30, both at 6:30 p.m.; and the football team plays Emery on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m.
The mountain bike team also begins its season at a competition in Kamas on Saturday, Aug. 25.
