Bartie Mumford, June 18, 1935 – May 25, 2018

Bartie Mumford, 82, passed away at Canyonlands Care Center on May 25, with her loving daughter by her side.

Bartie was the daughter of Helen Wehr Bartlett and Charles Martin Bartlett. With Eastern Shore roots going back to before the American Revolution, she was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 18, 1935, and grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, where she was an avid and competitive sailor.

She attended Bennington College in Vermont, but left college to follow her heart as a model, skier and equestrienne. She married Anthony Mumford of the Royal Air Force in Trinity Cathedral, Easton, in 1959. As the wife of a fighter pilot, she lived throughout the British Empire. She later lived in France for 16 years before joining her daughter, Lowrey, and son-in-law, Matthew Sienkiewicz, in Colorado and later, in Moab.

Elegant yet vibrant, passionate and kind, she lived and died with dignity and determination. Loyal and dedicated, she lived by the words of her favorite poet, Robert Frost: “But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.”

The world is a dimmer place without her, but there is one more star in the sky. When she could no longer live in her home, she was fortunate to live at the Canyonlands Care Center for her last three years. Sharp as a tack to the end, she had close relationships with many of the staff, and knew she was fortunate to have their compassion and love. Her family feels fortunate to have had access to such an exceptional facility.

At Bartie’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be an informal celebration of her life. Please contact Lowrey for information at lowrey@ecentral.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Grand County Hospice or the Working Clumber Spaniel Society.
