Grand boys soccer team beats South Sevier, falls to Manti

The Grand County High School boys soccer team sits at 4-3, 4-2 in Region 15 play after shutting out South Sevier in Monroe 4-0 on Tuesday, April 10. Grand lost a road match to Manti 3-1 on Thursday, April 12.

Versus the Rams, Grand got goals from Deklynd Chant, Juan Gonzalez, Jackson Sorenson and Richard Shumway. Miguel Dominguez mustered Grand’s lone goal versus the Templars on Thursday.

Grand was scheduled to host North Sanpete on Tuesday, April 17. The Red Devils are scheduled to play Emery in Castle Dale on Thursday, April 19 at 4 p.m.

Emery hosted Region 15 girls golf on Thursday, April 12, where Richfield placed first with 197 points, while Grand was next with 240 and the host Lady Spartans and Manti tied for third at 243.

Region 15 was scheduled to meet again at The Hideout in Monticello on Wednesday, April 18. Manti hosts the next tournament at the Palisades course in Sterling on Wednesday, April 25 at 11 a.m.

The boys tennis team hosted North Sanpete and Manti on Friday, April 13, beating North Sanpete 3-2 and losing 3-2 to Manti. Against both teams, Elton Kunze-Jones won in No. 1 singles and Kai Wainer won in No. 3 singles. Braxten Pierce won versus North Sanpete in No. 2 singles, but lost against Manti.

Hayden Lance and Tanner Mascaro lost both of their No. 1 doubles matches and Cody Johnston and Kasey Kemp also suffered a pair of defeats in No. 2 doubles.

The Red Devils were scheduled to play the Templars and Hawks again in road matches on Wednesday, April 18. They host San Juan on Tuesday, April 24, at 3 p.m., Richfield on Thursday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m., and South Sevier on Thursday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m.

The Red Devil track and field teams competed at the Desert Hills Invitational in St. George on Friday and Saturday, April 13, and 14, against schools from southwestern Utah, almost all of which were of higher classification. The boys took eighth out of 16 teams with 31 points, while the girls took sixth out of 15 with 35.5 points.

Grand junior Veda Gritts won both the discus (106 feet, 1 inch) and the shot put (35 feet, 1 inch) and placed fourth in the javelin (101 feet).

Other notable individual finishes include junior Connor Guerrero’s third-place run in the 300-meter hurdles (41.48) and junior Stacy Randall’s fourth-place effort in the 200-meters (23.23). Junior Jarom Shumway placed fifth in the shot put at 44 feet, 3 inches. The Grand boys’ top two distance runners, Ryan Lewis and Evan Ellison, as well as several other athletes, missed the meet because of other extracurricular activities.

The Red Devil track and field teams are next scheduled to compete at the Farm Bureau Invitational in Price on Friday, April 20.
