A 20-year-old motorcyclist from Minnesota was seriously injured on Friday, April 6, when a recreational vehicle (RV) ran over him as traffic came to a sudden stop on North Main Street.
The motorcyclist, a man from Minnetonka, Minnesota, was traveling northbound at approximately 4 p.m. in the area of North Main and 200 North when the vehicle in front of him braked rapidly to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
The sudden stop caused the motorcyclist to go down to avoid making contact with the vehicle, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department. Once he was down, the RV ran over the motorcyclist.
The driver of the RV did not immediately stop, reports said, and continued traveling on North Main Street.
Moab City Police Chief Jim Winder said there is a strong indication that the driver of the RV was unaware they had struck the motorcyclist.
The driver of the RV was flagged down, returned to the scene and was cooperative with investigators, reports said.
The motorcyclist suffered significant leg injuries and was transported to Moab Regional Hospital in serious condition; he was later transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. No further information about the victim was available.
The area is designated as a 30-mile-per-hour speed zone, but speed did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
Chief Winder said the accident was unusual for North Main Street, also known as U.S. Highway 191, despite the busy nature of downtown.
“People should be very aware that 191, due to its congestion, is dangerous, but we’re lucky we don’t have many accidents,” Winder said.
No charges were filed in the case, Winder said, and the case was closed.
