Red Devils win soccer match, pair of tennis matches

The Grand County High School boys soccer team defeated Richfield 2-1 on Thursday, April 5, with goals from Jameson Hawks and Jaxen Saunders, improving to 3-1 in Region 15 play, 3-2 overall heading into matches at South Sevier on Tuesday, April 10, and at Manti on Thursday, April 12. The Red Devils return home to play North Sanpete on Tuesday, April 17, at 4 p.m.

The Red Devils were also successful on the tennis courts on Tuesday, April 3, in the Sevier Valley, beating Richfield 3-2 and South Sevier 5-0.

Elton Kunze-Jones won both of his No. 1 singles matches, beating his Richfield opponent 6-3, 6-3 and his South Sevier opponent 6-0, 6-0.

In No. 2 singles, Kai Wainer lost 4-6, 1-6 against Richfield and Tanner Mascaro won 6-0, 6-0 against South Sevier.

In No. 3 singles, Kasey Kemp won against Richfield 6-4, 6-2 and Wainer won against South Sevier 6-1, 6-0.

Mascaro and Hayden Lance lost 4-6, 1-6 in No. 1 singles against Richfield, while Lance and Kemp won 6-2, 6-1 versus South Sevier.

In No. 2 doubles, Braxten Pierce and Cody Johnston won 6-4, 6-3 against Richfield and 6-1, 6-0 against South Sevier.

The Red Devils were scheduled to play at San Juan on Tuesday, April 10, and host matches on Friday, April 13, against North Sanpete at 10:30 a.m., and Manti at 3:30 p.m.

The Lady Red Devils had less success on the links at Cove View on Tuesday, April 3, placing fourth among the seven Region 15 teams. Those teams meet again on Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m., in Ferron.

On the track, the Red Devils placed first in the boys division and fifth in the girls division at the Temple View Qualifier in Manti on Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7. The boys scored 139 points to outpace host Manti by 23 points. Delta placed third with 112 points. In the girls division, Grand placed fifth with 53 points.

The Grand boys got first-place medals in two individual running events and one event in the field. Senior Ryan Lewis won the 1600-meter race at 4:48.33 and senior Dakota Johnson won the javelin at 145 feet, 9 inches, while sophomore Eli Hazlett won the 100-meters at 11:55. Lewis also placed third in the 3200-meters at 10:16.41, while Johnson placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles at 43.23.

All three individual winners contributed to the Red Devils’ relay success as well. Johnson joined junior Nolan Ramirez, junior Stacy Randall and freshman Dante Wells to place second in the 4×100-meter relay at 45.38; Johnson and Lewis joined Ramirez and junior Connor Guerrero to place second at 3:36.37 in the 4×400-meter relay; and Lewis and Hazlett joined Randall and Guerrero to win the medley relay at 3:50.37.

Among other notable finishes, Ramirez placed second in the long jump at 18 feet, 9 inches and sixth in the 400-meters at 54.79. Randall placed second in the 200-meters at 23.27 and third in the 100-meters at 11.69. Guerrero placed third in both the 200-meters (23.69) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.77). Sophomore Evan Ellison placed third in the 1600-meters at 4:55.05, fourth in the 3200-meters at 10:21.36 and fifth in the 800-meters at 2:12.80. Senior Ruben Villalpando placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 17.16 and eighth in the javelin at 128 feet, 3 inches. Junior Jarom Shumway placed fifth in both the shot put (43 feet, 2.5 inches) and the discus (110 feet, 1 inch) and sophomore Jayden Dowd placed fifth in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches and sixth in the javelin at 128 feet, 5 inches.

For the girls, junior Veda Gritts won the discus at 99 feet, 6 inches, while placing second in the shot put at an even 32 feet and fourth in the javelin at 103 feet, 6 inches. Freshman Kylah Ricks earned the next highest individual finish, placing second in the 1600-meters at 5:43.24. In the medley relay, Ricks joined Abby Mason, Auburn Jackman and Annabelle Garrett to place third at 4:46.33.

Jackman earned a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 200-meters (28.86) and the 400-meters (1:04.24). Other notable finishes included Garrett’s fourth-place high jump of 4 feet, 7 inches and ninth-place run of 29.12 in the 200-meters; freshman Emree Olsen’s seventh-place 2:49.08 in the 800-meters; junior Shane Stroder’s seventh-place 31-feet, 5-inch throw in the shot put; and senior Hannah Stripeika’s eighth-place run of 2:50.13 in the 800-meters.

The Red Devils are scheduled to run at the Desert Hills Invitational in St. George on Friday and Saturday, April 13 and 14.
