On Saturday, Feb. 24, at Richfield High School, the Grand County High School Speech and Debate Team took second place at the Region 15 Championship tournament.
Seniors Grace Osusky and Aidan Guzman-Newton tied for first place in Lincoln-Douglas debate, going undefeated and receiving perfect speaker points in all rounds, with senior Caylee Stroder placing fourth in the event.
Osusky also placed first in foreign extemporaneous speaking, with Kai Wainer placing fourth. Guzman-Newton also represented Grand in national extemporaneous speaking, placing fifth, with junior Phillip Geiser placing second and sophomore Ty Martinez placing fourth.
In impromptu, senior Cody Gatlin and freshman Rowan Murdock tied for third. Sophomore Emma Millis placed second in original oratory.
Cody Gatlin and Kai Wainer also took third in public forum. Sophomores Miranda Corbin and Jaidyn Thomas took fifth in public forum.
Diego Winn and Ty Martinez also competed in the student congress event, with Winn placing fourth and Martinez placing seventh.
The team is preparing to compete at the 3A State Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10, at Juab High School in Nephi, as well its fundraiser for the Tournament of Champions.
