The Grand County Red Devils traveled to Cortez, Colorado, and defeated Montezuma-Cortez 57-0 on Friday, Aug. 25, allowing the Panthers only 23 yards of total offense, while scoring almost at will offensively.
Grand only ran 39 offensive plays, scoring touchdowns on eight of them. Grand senior quarterback Josh Jones and sophomore Bryant Troutt each had a hand in three touchdowns. Jones was 4-of-6 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns with five carries for 50 yards and a touchdown rushing, while Troutt rushed for 33 yards and two touchdowns on four carries and completed his only pass for a 13-yard touchdown.
Grand’s defense forced eight punts out of the Panthers, who rushed for 23 yards collectively, and although they completed three passes, they were for a total of zero yards. The Red Devils defended seven passes and collected a pair of sacks from Dakota Johnson and Chris Thompson.
The Red Devils scored 35 points before halftime and spent the third and fourth quarters on cruise control for the win. They opened the scoring with a 35-yard pass from Jones to senior Nick Downard. Johnson scored on a 26-yard run later in the first quarter before Jones threw another touchdown, this one from 72 yards out to senior Jarett Reidhead.
In the second quarter, Jones scored on a 5-yard run and Troutt, who also plays quarterback, scored on a 3-yard run.
After the defense scored via safety for the second straight game, Downard caught a 13-yard touchdown pass, this one from Troutt. Troutt scored on a 16-yard run and junior Trent Elmore scored on a 50-yard run to round out the scoring. Freshman Dante Wells remained perfect on extra-points in his high school career, connecting on all seven of his attempts against the Panthers.
