The Grand County High School track and field team’s season came to an end at the Utah State Track and Field Championships, which took place on Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, at Brigham Young University in Provo. The Red Devil boys took seventh place and the girls took 15th.
The highlight of the two-day event for the Red Devils was when the boys took second in the medley relay as the quartet of Stacy Randall, Connor Guerrero, Trent Elmore and Ryan Lewis ran a 3:44.94, about five seconds out of first place. Lewis also scored points for the Red Devils in two of his three individual races, placing third in the 3,200-meter race at 9:54.48, and sixth in the 800-meter race at 2:02.89.
Lewis and teammate Evan Ellison both finished just outside of the top eight in the 1,600-meter race as Ellison placed ninth and Lewis 10th with an identical time of 4:48.06. Ellison finished sixth in the 3,200 as well, running a 10:09.99.
Grand’s Teddy Park placed fifth in the high jump, matching his personal best by clearing 6 feet, 0 inches. Grand’s only other scoring individual event came when Ruben Villalpando placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.85. The Grand boys also placed fourth in the 4×100-meter race as Elmore, Guerrero and Randall were joined by Kasey Kemp to run a 45.42.
Jarom Shumway just missed the top eight in the shot put with a 10th-place 39-foot, 2-inch throw, and in the 110-meter hurdles, in which he ran in 11th place at 17.53. Villalpando placed 13th in the 300-meter hurdles at 46.33, Elmore placed 15th in the 200-meter race at 23.95, and Nolan Ramirez placed 16th in the long jump at 17 feet, 9.75 inches.
The girls had a pair of scoring individual finishes, led by Halli Stocks’ third-place effort in the discus with a 103-foot, 5-inch throw. Auburn Jackman also scored for Grand with an eighth-place 1:01.85 in the 400-meter race.
Ali Hirt and Jayelen Knowles placed 10th and 12th, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race with runs of 5:38.03 and 5:42.23. Jackman placed 12th in the 200-meters at 28.18, Megan Pfnister placed 12th in the 300-meter hurdles at 51.40 and Knowles placed 13th in the 3,200-meters at 12:50.11.
In other field events, Abby Mason placed 14th in the high jump at 4 feet, 6 inches, and 15th in the long jump at 11 feet, 11 inches. Delta won the boys team championship with 128 points, while North Summit ran away with the girls title, outscoring the field by 96 points and finishing with 160.
The Red Devil seniors were honored at senior awards night. Grand County High School’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 25, at 8 p.m.
