The Grand County High School boys and girls track teams began competition at the Price Farm Bureau Invitational on Saturday, March 18, where the Red Devils placed third among boys teams and ninth among girls teams.
Grand’s boys scored 63 points, trailing only Stansbury’s 197.5 and Emery’s 70.5. Grand’s girls scored 25 points, finishing fourth among 2A schools at the meet.
Grand junior Ryan Lewis placed first in the 3,200-meter race, finishing with a time of 10:33.36. He also placed fourth in the 1,600-meters (4:46.59; first among 2A competitors), and fifth in the 800-meters (2:09.55).
Grand placed second in both the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays. Dakota Johnson, Kasey Kemp, Connor Guerrero and Trent Elmore ran the first relay in 46.27 seconds, while Elmore, Johnson, Guerrero and Nolan Ramirez finished the 4×400 at 3:43.12.
Grand’s Jarom Shumway enjoyed a strong meet in running and throwing events, placing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (18.18), while also placing second in the shot put (42 feet, 8.5 inches) and seventh in the discus (99 feet, 2 inches). Guerrero placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (45.10) Teddy Park placed fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and Ramirez placed sixth in the 400-meters (54.70) and eighth in the long jump (19 feet, 11.5 inches).
Elmore had two strong individual events, although he finished just outside of the top eight in each, placing ninth in the 200-meters (24.17) and 11th in the 100-meters (11.97). Ruben Villalpando placed ninth in the javelin (130 feet) and Taylor Horton tied for 10th in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches).
The Lady Red Devils were led by sophomore Veda Gritts, who placed second in the shot put (31 feet, 3.5 inches) and fourth in the javelin (103 feet, 2 inches). Sophomore Auburn Jackman placed third in the 400-meters (1:04.93), and senior Megan Pfnister placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (53.61).
Grand also got strong individual events out of junior Abby Mason, who placed eighth in the high jump (4 feet, 7 inches) and 11th in the long jump (14 feet, 6.5 inches). Junior Hannah Stripeika placed ninth in the 3,200-meters (13:53.52), 10th in the 800-meters (2:47.63) and 11th in the 1,600-meters (6:11.30); and junior Baelie Pierce placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (18.81).
The Red Devils are next scheduled to compete at the Matt Burr Invitational in Salina on Saturday, March 25.
