The Grand County High School baseball team played a pair of games against No. 1 North Sevier this past week, losing at home 4-0 on Tuesday, April 5, before defeating the Wolves 5-4 in Salina on Friday, April 8. Grand also played Carbon’s junior varsity team in Moab on Saturday, April 9, defeating the Dinos 8-7.
It was the second week in a row for Grand, at the time ranked No. 4 in 2A, to play a region opponent with a higher ranking twice in the same week. Last week, the Red Devils were no-hit by Gunnison Valley in a shutout loss before rebounding the following day with an extra-inning walk-off victory. This week followed a somewhat-similar script. In Moab on Tuesday, April 5, North Sevier put its ace on the mound and Fisher Andersen did not disappoint, allowing only one Grand hit. Grand senior Dalton McElhaney held his own on the mound, but Grand committed three errors defensively in the 4-0 loss. Three days later in Salina, Grand claimed a 5-4 road win with help from doubles by senior Brayden Ward and junior Christian Wilson. Sophomore Josh Jones was the winning pitcher for Grand.
Another stalemate versus another 2A powerhouse helped Grand move up one spot in the Deseret News 2A rankings. The Red Devils are now ranked No. 3, behind No. 2 North Sevier, which moved down one spot thanks to the home loss to Grand, and No. 1 Enterprise.
Grand is currently third in the 2A East standings at 4-2 behind the North Sevier and Gunnison, which are both 3-1 with their losses coming at the hands of the Red Devils. The region champion will host the first two rounds of the 2A state playoffs on May 7.
Grand was scheduled to play at San Juan on Tuesday, April 12, and have two more opportunities this week to climb the region rankings. Grand plays at home versus San Juan on Thursday, April 14, and home versus Monticello on Tuesday, April 19. Both games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
