Lightning storms did not deter the Grand County Middle School cross country team in participating in its second meet of the season, the Lloyd’s Lake Classic which took place Friday, Sept. 5 in Monticello.
Seventh-grader Evan Ellison had a strong showing for the Thunderbirds finishing third out of 90 runners with a time of 9:34 on the 1.5-mile course. Just out of the medals, teammate Eli Hazlett – running in his first meet – finished in 11th place. Hazlett was followed by Braxton Pierce (13th place), Soren Indergard (24th), Jacob Andrew (27th) and Alex Lacy (31st). The boys’ team placed third in the team competition.
GCMS placed two runners in the top ten for the girls’ race: eighth-grader Auburn Jackman narrowly edged out teammate seventh-grader Ali Hirt, with a strong kick at the finish line placing sixth with a time of 11:13. Hirt finished eighth overall with a time of 11:20. Both girls took down the school course record of 11:21, formerly held by current high school sophomore Jayelyn Knowles. Rounding out the girls’ roster were Josie Wakefield (37th), Jessie Anderson (44th) and Julia Crane (64th).
The T-birds will next compete in Bluff on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014. To follow the T-birds 2014 Season, check their website at: http://gcms-xcountry.blogspot.com.
