The Grand County High School debate team took second place at the 2A South region competition at Emery High School in Castle Dale on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Fifteen students traveled to the event to compete in seven speech and debate events. By placing second, GCHS has the opportunity to take three students per event to compete at the state 2A debate tournament to take place at Bingham High School in South Jordan on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22.
The team performed well in Public Forum, which is a debate event with two-person teams. Participants don’t know if they’re arguing in favor of, or against, the topic until they enter the room to debate. The Public Forum topic was “Single-gender classrooms would improve the quality of education in American public schools.” Anna Scherer and Deanna Irvin took first place in Public Forum and was the only team to be undefeated at the tournament. Kayla Weston and Brityn Ballard placed in fourth.
Irvin also took second in Extemp, with Weston finishing sixth. In Impromptu, Scherer placed fourth and Emma Sweeney and Meera Edwards tied for sixth; in Lincoln-Douglas, Stacey Andrus placed fourth; in oratory, Robin Willschiedt placed second, Andrus placed fourth and Skyler Johnson placed sixth; and in congress, Becca Farnsworth placed fifth and Emilia Cubelos placed sixth.
“This is a team competition,” Grand County debate coach Kristin Millis said. “All the students who competed earned points for our team. By having a full slate of competitors for the state tournament, we are in a good position to compete for the state title.”
