Swim, bike, run

The third annual Moab Triathlon is this Saturday, June 8 at Ken’s Lake. The event is several races that are being run simultaneously. The start for all the races begin at Ken’s Lake, south of Moab.

The XTERRA Moab Full triathlon starts with a 1500-meter swim in Ken’s Lake, a 15-mile bike ride on the Steelbender Trail and a two-loop 6.8-mile ride to Faux Falls. The XTERRA Sport triathlon will travel the same trails, but only half the distances.

XTERRA points will only be given for the full triathlon. Amateur competitors can earn points over three events to earn a regional title. With a regional title comes an invitation to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championship at Snowbasin near Ogden.

Top finishers in regional and national championships are invited to compete at the XTERRA World Championship in Maui, Hawaii

The Moab Road Olympic Triathlon will start with the same 1500-meter swim in Ken’s Lake, but it will follow with a 40-kilometer bike ride on Spanish Valley Drive to Pack Creek Ranch and back, with a finish of the same two-loop 6.8-mile run to Faux Falls and finishing at Ken’s Lake.

The Moab Sprint Triathlon will also travel the same road to Pack Creek Ranch with the swim, bike and run all half the distances of the Olympic triathlon.

The Moab Kids Triathlon, for children between the ages of 7 and 10, will start with a 25-meter swim, 1.5-mile bike, and a half-mile run. The older kids, between the ages of 11 and 14, participating in the Moab Kids Triathlon will swim 200 meters, bike 6 kilometers and finish with a 1-mile run.

Awards will be given to the top three overall winners of each race, as well as the top three finishers in each age group.

Age group categories include: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, etc. as well as physically challenged, Athena, and Clydesdale division. Athena includes women over 150 pounds, Clydesdale over 200 pounds.
