Dr. John J. Hammond to present on Moab’s Hammond Family History

Moab Museum invites the public to join us on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 11am and 2pm for two unique programs being offered by Dr. John J. Hammond, on historic Moab’s Hammond Family. Dr. Hammond is a descendant of Francis A. Hammond, the father of Moab’s Fletcher B. Hammond, Sr, proprietor of, Hammond & Co. Mercantile, and later, Hammond & Sons, Co.

Dr. Hammond retired from Kent State University in 2007 and has been authoring a series of books related to LDS church history, he will present on his two most recent books. At 11am, Dr. Hammond will present Island Adventures: The Hawaiian Mission of Francis A. Hammond, 1851-1865 that will focus on the Hammond family’s time in the Sandwich Islands (Hawai’i), where the birth of F.B. Hammond takes place in March of 1855. The public will then be invited back at 2pm, as Dr. Hammond will present The San Juan Mission of Francis A. Hammond, 1883-1900 which follows the Hammond Family from Huntsville, Utah to Monticello and eventually, Moab. Francis A. Hammond was the stake president of the LDS church San Juan Stake from 1885-1900, which covered the Four Corner’s Area (southwestern Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah) and included Moab. Frank Hammond lived most of the time in Bluff, Utah, but for the last three years of his life he lived in Moab, and many of his children and their spouses lived there for many years.

These two works feature the 43 journal books of Francis (Frank) A. Hammond, the great-great-grandfather, of Dr. John J. Hammond. Dr. Hammond holds B.S. and M.A. degrees from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from SUNY (State University of New York) at Buffalo. Having taught political science and philosophy at what then was Southern Utah State College (in Cedar City) for three years (1966-69) and at Kent State University in Ohio for thirty-five years (1972-2007). He presently resides in Geneva, Ohio. For the past twenty-three years he has enjoyed a second career in Mormon history. He is the author of what will be an eighteen-volume series entitled The Quest for the New Jerusalem: A Mormon Generational Saga.
