
Sofrona “Ann” Oates, aged 77, passed away on June 17, 2025, in Moab, Utah. She was born on May 22, 1948.
Ann was known for her profound passion for the natural world, particularly her career and hobby as a professional rock hound. Her enthusiasm for hunting arrowheads, dinosaur bones, and other rare rocks and minerals it was more than a hobby, it was a way of life that defined her.
Ann is survived by her son, Ryan Oates; grandchildren, Tyler Oates and Jaren Oates; and a great-granddaughter, Hazleigh Oates.
She was a cherished individual whose love for the hills and exploration of nature’s treasures brought joy to her and those around her. Her life was a testament to following one’s passion, and she will be fondly remembered as someone who felt most at home amidst the serene beauty of nature’s landscapes.
Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations to explore and appreciate the natural world.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Old City Park in Moab.
