August 10, 1948 – January 7, 2025

Larry David Axtell passed away, peacefully, at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City on January 7, 2025.
Larry was born in Cortez, Colorado, on August 10, 1948, to David Axtell and Emma Barnett, both of Oklahoma. He attended Grand County High School and Silverton Colorado High School, where he was active in drama and sports. He graduated from Grand County High School in 1996.
After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was deployed for service to the Vietnam War aboard the USS Enterprise (the world’s first nuclear aircraft carrier).
After four years of service, Larry worked in the uranium industry in Moab, retiring from Rio Algom (BHP Billiton) after 36 years.
Larry enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, photography and anything involving the outdoors. He especially enjoyed time spent with grandkids and family.
He was preceded in death by his father, David; mother, Emma; and sister-in-law, Cheryl.
Larry is survived by his wife of 26 years, Janet (Bowman) Axtell of Moab; his sister, Karen Gibson (Clifford) of Helper, Utah; brother, Royce Axtell (Cheryl) of Wellington; brother, Donald Axtell (Suzie) of Oklahoma; brother, Danny Axtell (Cassie) of Salt Lake City; son, Brian Axtell (Chelsey) of Johnstown, Colorado; daughter, Danielle Guerrero (Eddy) of Moab; stepdaughter, Courtney Steiner (Roston) of Silt, Colorado; stepdaughter ,Carrie Stevens (Doug) of Moab; stepson, Matt Lammert (Shannon) of Moab; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry is loved by grandchildren Derrick Axtell (Karissa), Kris Axtell, Cheyenne Shumway, Madison Shumway, Kaison Guerrero, Shae Lynn Worrell (Matthew), Corrina Jarman, Bradley Jarman (Kortnie), Kaelyn Ott (Zack), Brayden Lammert, Hayden Steiner, and eight great-grandchildren.
At Larry’s request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
