GCHS girls tennis competes at State Tournament

The Grand County High School Girls Tennis Team finished their season this past weekend at the 3A state tournament in SLC.  2A schools are combined with 3A schools at the state tournament to increase the number of overall teams in the pool. The varsity girls competed in the first round of the tournament at Brighton High School on Thursday.  The Lady Red Devils had some very tough match-ups and hard-fought games. At the end of the day, they came away with one win that would advance to the next day.

“State competition is very tough playing against 3A and private schools.  Our team played with grit, taking many points off these larger schools, all while having a great time,” said assistant coach Lisa Scott.

Paya Maughan moved on to the second round of the tournament at Liberty Park on Friday, competing against the region champ and top singles player for South Sevier. In a grueling 3-hour match, the girls split sets and went on to a tie-break third set.  With no easy points for either girl, Paya narrowly lost 5-7 in a third set.

Grand County finished the season with a 5-1 record in the region and an overall regular season record of 5-2.

“The coaching staff is so proud of the entire team. Both JV and Varsity put the time in this year and are set up to be very competitive again next season” Scott stated.
