Cosmo’s Corner: Cosmo’s cabinet of curiosities!

Cosmo the library cat, a handsome tuxedo, sits in the rare books shelf of the library.

Do you love old books? I know I do! Well, I love sleeping on them, anyway. You may already know about the Library Lobby Book Sale, but there’s a new development: The Grand County Public Library Friends have recently added a cabinet of rare and collectible books for sale! This assortment of unusual books includes books signed by the author, a few first and limited editions and antiquarian books. All of them are interesting and some are quite beautiful, much like your humble correspondent.

Right now, among others, there’s an antique book on ancient Egyptian history with a gorgeous gilded cover, cool illustrations and a fold-out map of Egypt and Nubia (modern southern Egypt and Sudan) inside. Cats were held in high regard in ancient Egypt and were welcome companions in both life and the afterlife. I’d recommend any book about such a forward-thinking society! There’s also a rare copy of a book about trout fishing signed by the author. I expected that one to smell more interesting, but it just smells like a normal book. Side note to Library Friends: consider adding scratch-n-sniff books to the sale?

The “Friends,” a group of volunteers who work hard to support the library with the book sale, will be adding fresh books to this rare book cabinet regularly, so check back often for new-old treasures. You’re guaranteed to find something to spark your curiosity, and the best part is all proceeds directly benefit the library. Meow for now and happy reading everyone!
