Scholarship announced in honor of Geoff and Sandy Freethey

The Geoff and Sandy Freethey Honorary High School Mountain Bike Scholarship will be awarded annually to a high school sophomore who has committed to racing as a freshman and is in need of a new bike to continue progressing as a student athlete. This scholarship will be administered by the Moab Red Devil Mountain Bike Team Head coaches to better support youth mountain biking in Moab and the Moab Red Devil Mountain Bike Racing Team.

Along with many other people, Geoff and Sandy Freethey played a critical role in the evolution of mountain biking in Moab. When Sandy became the chair of the Grand County Trail Mix, she took the concept of a county-sponsored trails committee to the next level. By working with the City of Moab, Grand County, the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, and the National Park Service via regular monthly meetings, singletrack trail building in the Moab region took off and the trail system enjoyed today by visitors and locals alike was created.

Sandy and Geoff worked tirelessly to both mark and map the trails resulting in a world-class trail system worthy of Moab’s unique and magnificent public lands. Every time you find yourself consulting a map along the trail on one of Moab’s many single-track trail systems, Geoff is the person that designed, created, and placed that map.

Those interested in donating to the scholarship fund can send checks made out to “Freethey Scholarship” to “Freethey Scholarship, Western Spirit Cycling, 478 Mill Creek Drive, Moab, UT 84532.”
