Music Festival offers string camp to youth: Local musicians assist in two sessions of program

This summer, the Moab Music Festival will partner with the BEACON String Program to offer two sessions of string camp at the Moab Charter School. Registration for each session is now open.

BEACON Afterschool Program serves students in Grand County in kindergarten through eighth grade. With an international blend of enrichment and academic support, BEACON helps up to 700 students each year through over 160 enrichment clubs. 60% of BEACON Afterschool Program students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

The Moab Music Festival was founded in 1992, and in addition to its internationally-acclaimed annual music festival, they provide music education and cultural enrichment for the Moab community. A grant to the Moab Music Festival from the City of Moab has helped make these 2021 string sessions possible.

The first session will take place June 14 through June 18 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Beginner, intermediate and advanced string instrument coaching will be provided during each half-day by BEACON String Program Coordinator Tamara Freida. Other Moab string players — Nicole Dvorscak, Merry Harrison, Debra Holland and Kris Westrum — will also assist in instruction.

Based on their level of string instrument experiences, first session students will be introduced to either beginner string skills, intermediate ensemble performance or advanced musicality. Each level of skill features games, small group lessons, individual coaching and more. Master pianist Michael Barrett, who serves as the music director for the Moab Music Festival, will also coach the students in individual and group sessions.

The second session held on August 9 through August 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be geared more towards beginners or those looking to get back into their instruments. This session will help young musicians get back in musical shape just before the school year through games, coaching and practice.

Each session costs $60 per student, with sliding scale pay options. Registration has already begun for both sessions — make sure to register your student soon!
