Red Onion hiking trail opens

Shed a tear of joy! A new 2.4 mile hiking loop, rated “very difficult” because of some scrambling sections, is now open. The trailhead is at an old drill pad off the Onion Creek Road, which is off of the River Road; a high-clearance vehicle is required to drive the last half mile to the trailhead.

“The scenery is fantastic,” said Maddie Logowitz, director of the Grand County Division of Active Transportation and Trails. “There are several hoodoos and narrow canyons and views of both Castleton Tower and Fisher Towers.”

The trail’s creation was championed by Marc Thomas, the hiking representative for the Grand County Trail Mix Committee. Bureau of Land Management staff performed the required environmental surveys and clearances, and the project received funding from a Recreational Trail Program grant. 250 volunteer hours went into trail construction. The trail is closed to bikes and horses.
