Red Devil boys go 1-1 on hardwood

The Grand County High School (GCHS) boys basketball team went 1-1 last week, beating Monticello 75-50 on Dec. 3 at home before falling to Summit Academy 67-59 in Draper on Dec. 6.

The Red Devils had double-digit scorers against the Monticello Buckaroos. Ryelan Jones had 14 points and six rebounds; Kaine Allred had 13 points and eight rebounds; Milo Birdwell had 13 points; and Luke Williams had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

“We did what we were supposed to against Monticello,” GCHS boys basketball coach Scott Horton said. “We played well for three of the four quarters. We didn’t have a good third quarter, but picked it back up in the fourth.”

Against Summit Academy, the third quarter is where the game got away from the team as GCHS played neck and neck with the Bears the other three quarters. Allred had 21 points and eight rebounds, Jones had 14 points and three steals, and Eli Hazlett had 10 points and eight rebounds.

“We let them off the hook,” Horton said of the game against Summit Academy. “We’ve got to learn to win close games.”

Horton said that the team has to figure out how to be more intense coming out of halftime, which should come as they learn to play with each other in varsity games.

The GCHS boys team next plays at home on back-to-back nights: versus Cortez on Thursday, Dec. 12, and versus Green River on Friday, Dec. 13. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

The GCHS girls led by seven points going into the fourth quarter versus Pinnacle on Dec. 4 but were unable to close out the win, falling 40-38. Megan Zunich and Josalyn Murphy, both freshmen, had 10 points, while Tenney Cook had eight.

The GCHS girls team was scheduled to play West Ridge Academy on Friday, Dec. 6, but the game was canceled because of too many injuries on the West Ridge team.

GCHS was also scheduled to play Green River and Monticello in Moab on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Wednesday, Dec.11, but the results of those games weren’t available by press time.

The GCHS girls team next plays at Green River on Thursday, Dec. 19, and at West Ridge Academy on Friday, Dec. 20.
