The growing season for Moab’s own Youth Garden Project is long over. Frost and an early dark is a reality in the valley. That’s why the staff at YGP is inviting everyone in for a Garden & Culinary Trivia Night.
“There are so many fewer events in the winter, and the town really slows down,” said Abby Meyer, community programs coordinator at YGP. “We thought, why not do something fun and engaging at night when it’s dark and cold?”
Teams of trivia fans will compete in the warmth of 98 Center restaurant on Dec. 5. Questions will range widely, with subjects from agriculture to cooking – with some bad puns thrown in as well.
Meyer said there will be six rounds of questions, some with audio and visual components.
“But I don’t want to give away too much!” she said, reporting that the YGP staff was still working on surprises and challenges for players, including prizes for winning teams.
During the event, 98 Center will be serving a custom menu of drinks themed to stimulate players’ minds. Not only that, but 9.8% of sales, throughout the day and during trivia, will go to the Youth Garden Project.
“It’s a great fundraiser for us, and we really appreciate 98 Center. YGP has such a supportive community here in Moab,” said Meyer.
Founded in 1996, the Youth Garden Project sits on 1.5 acres of land next to Grand County High School and offers workshops, community events and youth programs throughout the year. Over 800 students from the Grand County School District and the Moab Charter School learn about agriculture from YGP each year through field trips and after school programs.
“Trivia night is a great thing we do in the off-season,” said Meyer, commenting that the YGP staff are always working even when things aren’t growing yet.
Last February, local Kate Niederehe’s team triumphed at trivia.
“There was a range of creative questions to engage team members with different interests from music to geography…all relating to food,” Niederehe said.
“98 Center had great food, drink, and atmosphere that made the whole night really great,” she said, adding that she would highly recommend entering the competition with a group of friends.

“We can put together teams too,” said Meyer, “so if you only have two or three people, we will match you up with others. Maybe you can meet some new people!”
