The Grand County High School Red Devils cross country team began its season at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. On Wednesday, Aug. 14, where the harriers competed at the Highland Invitational, a 2.9 mile race.
This is one of their biggest meets of the season, with about 2,000 runners divided among freshman, sophomore, junior varsity and varsity divisions.
Reigning 3A cross country champion junior Kylah Ricks ran in the girls varsity division, in which she placed fourth overall with a blistering time of 17:59.5.
“Kylah Ricks proved that she is not only the best in 3A, but one of the best in the entire state of Utah,” GCHS cross country coach Randy Martin said. “She ran a great race.”
Ricks was joined in the varsity division by senior Jessie Anderson (151st, 22:50.6), sophomore Lorena Johnson (200th, 25:41.3) and senior Rachel Thompson (210th, 27:18.4).
In the junior varsity division, Alexa Stripeika placed 209th at 29:00.6. The girls did not place as team because they didn’t have at least five runners in any one division.
The boys placed 28th out of 42 teams, as each athlete ran in the varsity division. Senior Malachi Ricks finished 18th at 15:44.9, while senior Evan Ellison placed 37th at 16:07.5.
Sophomore Arthur Hawks placed 209th at 18:27.2; senior Patrick Johnson placed 256th at 19:30.8; senior Soren Indergard placed 280th at 20:29.2; and Owen Linares placed 284th at 20:37.5.
Martin had praise for the effort each of his runners put in, especially Malachi Ricks and Patrick Johnson.
“I’m very proud of Malachi Ricks,” Martin said. “He put in a lot of work over the summer and it paid off in a big way. He is one of the runners in 3A this season.
“Patrick Johnson has worked his tail off for 14 months to make the varsity team,” Martin added. “He not only made the team, but is now one of our top runners.”
GCHS’s next meet is the Southern Utah University Invitational in Cedar City on Saturday, Aug. 24.
“The team has been working hard and will get faster and faster as the season progresses,” Martin said.
Boys Golf
The GCHS golf team had its third meet of the season, hosting Region 12 at the Moab Golf Club on Tuesday, Aug. 13, where Carbon added to its lead over the rest of the region, shooting a 311.
The Red Devils followed in second at 329, and Richfield in third at 351.
Through three meets, Carbon leads GCHS by 48 strokes at 948 to 996, while Richfield is third at 1,012.
Region 12 next meets at the Emery-hosted tournament at the Millsite Golf Course in Ferron on Thursday, Aug. 22.
