Old airport runway ‘a recipe for disaster’

Dear Editor:

I am in San Juan County. Sky Ranch is a private airport that is being enlarged from a rural ranchers’ runway to an airport that will have up to 50 homes and airplanes.

The problem is that the runway was enlarged, and ends next to the main access road into the residential  area. School buses access the road daily and an accident could kill half the children in the surrounding area. The location of the runway ending at the road is a recipe for a disaster.

San Juan County, where the airport is located, has shown little concern for the safety and welfare of the residents in the area, and has not closed down the airport until the dangerous runway can be modified.

What can your agency (San Juan County Commission) do to help us close the airport until modifications can make the runway save for vehicles including school buses?
