Get serious about fitness

Whether it’s 2 p.m. on a Sunday or nearly midnight on a Wednesday, members of South Town

Gym can get inside for their fitness training.

Located at 1070 S. U.S. Highway 191, the gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“People have access to the gym at a time that’s convenient to their schedule,” said gym manager

Andrea Noyes. Noyes pointed out that many of Moab’s residents may work nontraditional hours and appreciate the gym’s accessibility.

South Town Gym members have access to an array of exercise options, including full free weights, cardio fitness machines, strength training machines and stability/agility exercise aids like physio balls. There are mats for grappling or mixed martial arts, tanning beds, saunas and a mirrored dance room.

Memberships are currently discounted for a summer special.

A one-month membership is typically $65, but with the summer special, a one-month membership is $45. A two-month membership is $65, compared to the regular rate of $130. Noyes said the summer special will run through September.

The Moab Academy of Dance uses the dance room, and the organization offers a variety of dance classes for youth ages 3 to 18. Also for youth, Noyes said the gym will host a self-defense class for teens and children under 18. She said the start date is likely to be in early May.

For adults, there are many classes available, including the popular “Lunch Crunch” that is held from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This class combines cycling and body sculpting exercise. (Reserve a space in advance for Lunch Crunch at crunchclubfitness.com.)

There are two different strength training classes, as well as classes for kung fu, tai chi and yoga.

Winston Shull said he just bought his membership and enjoys the variety at the gym.

He said he appreciates the selection of equipment, and said the gym’s location is close to his home and is not located in one of the busier areas in town.

“Everyone who comes here is pretty serious (about fitness),” Shull said. “I like being around that

kind of environment, that mentality.”

Noyes said the gym’s classes do change over time and, while they try to keep their website up-to-date, she said it never hurts to call ahead and check the current class schedule.

For people who want more time at the gym, there are quarterly, semi-annual and annual memberships available. Memberships can be purchased at the gym during regular business hours.

And, Noyes said, members of South Town Gym who carry certain types of health insurance can be reimbursed through their insurance companies. People whose health plans include SilverSneakers or Silver&Fit can get their gym memberships through those plans. SelectHealth will reimburse any policy-holder up to $240, which is “pretty much your whole year membership” Noyes said.

Noyes is a teacher at the gym and said she has an ACE Personal Trainer Certification and is certified in CrossFit.

She said she used to work in law enforcement, and as she transitioned away from that career, she became passionate about physical activity as a healthy outlet. She has worked at the South Town Gym for six years.

“It’s fun to watch people’s lives transform and the confidence they gain once they start investing

in their health,” she said.
