Wrestling team goes 3-5 at Manti Holiday Classic

The Grand County High School wrestling team defeated San Juan 54-0 on Wednesday, Dec. 12, before traveling to Manti and going 3-5 versus the other schools at the Manti Holiday Classic, which took place Friday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 15.

Grand County High School began its tournament in Manti with a 65-12 loss to South Sevier. Versus the Rams, grapplers Carson Whitney and Jarom Shumway each earned pinfall victories.

Next, the Red Devils competed with Ben Lomond, winning 41-24. Chris Thompson and Jimmie Johnson each won by pinfall

GCHS’ third dual was against North Sevier, which the Red Devils won 42-18, with help from pinfalls by Thompson, Shumway and Dylan Harrison.

In its fourth dual, GCHS lost 53-24 to Altamont. Versus the Longhorns, Thompson, Shumway and Whitney each had pinfall victories.

The Red Devils lost to American Leadership Academy 60-18 in their next dual. Shumway, Thompson and Trent Elmore each won by pinfall. Whitney suffered a pinfall loss, his only in the tournament.

Versus host Manti, Grand got pinfall wins by Thompson, Shumway, Whitney, Elmore, Harrison and Jimmie Johnson, but still lost 48-36.

GCHS squeaked by Carbon 37-36 with pins by Shumway, Elmore, Johnson and Whitney.

Versus Panguitch in their final dual of the tournament, the Red Devils lost 42-40, despite pinfall wins by Whitney, Thompson, Shumway and Levi Merz. Johnson won by decision.

The Red Devils next compete on January 4 and 5, 2019, at the 3A Duals in Richfield.
