‘Stay gold, Ponyboy’

“Greasers” in Mr. Secrist’s English class at Grand County Middle School on Oct. 24 celebrated reading the book “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. Pictured (left to right) back row: Mr. Secrist, Elana Ross, Natalie Skowbo, Aliah Alejandre, Belle Scow, Kyson McDonnal, Kelly Mohler, Remy Roberts and Brayden Castor. Front row: Ethan Thompson, Ingrid Payne, Aspen Foy, Payten Gregory and Allie Nelson. Joan Cannon, Grand County Middle School (GCMS) librarian, said the eighth-grade students discussed the differences in how the producer took the book and made changes in the movie. The classes talked about scenes in the book that were left out of the movie, and also wrote their own scenes that they would have added. From the experience of reading “The Outsiders,” Mr. Secrist told the students that, “No, life isn’t fair, but we can learn and grow above and beyond tough situations to make a better life for ourselves.” [Photo courtesy of Joan Cannon]
