Lady Red Devils place eighth at state

The Grand County High School volleyball team went 2-2 at the UHSAA Utah State 3A Volleyball Championship tournament at Utah Valley University on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 24 and 25, finishing in eighth place.

In the first round, Grand played Region 14 champion Union, falling 3-0 with game scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21. With the first round loss, the best Grand could finish was sixth in the tournament format.

In the Lady Red Devils’ second match, they beat Judge Memorial 25-16, 26-24, 14-25, and 25-12 to extend their season.

The following day, Grand won three straight close games in a match versus Juab: 25-20, 26-24 and 26-24 to advance to the sixth-place match against Richfield.

Versus the Wildcats, the Lady Devils forced five games, but Richfield was able to hold GCHS off to win sixth place, forcing GCHS to settle for eighth. Game scores were 25-22 Grand, 25-20 Richfield, 25-19 Richfield, 25-18 Grand and 15-11 Richfield.

“(It was an) amazing season the Lady Devils had,” said Britney Melton, GCHS volleyball coach, in a Facebook post. “We took eighth this year and (were) able to get a ton of experience for a young group of kids. I know we are going to do great things in the future, along with bring back some school spirit.”
