Football, volleyball teams have postseason action

The Grand County High School (GCHS) football and volleyball teams are scheduled postseason play this week after a week in which the football team had a bye and the volleyball team completed its regular season in a three-way tie for third place in the Region 15 standings, following a 3-1 loss to San Juan on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Blanding.

The loss to the Lady Broncos meant that Grand, Emery and South Sevier all concluded region play with 6-6 records. A three-way coin toss took place at the state cross country meet on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Salt Lake City, where Grand got the No. 5 seed. In the match in Blanding, San Juan dominated the first two games 25-15 and 25-12 before Grand won the third game 25-23. Grand forced San Juan to work extra in the fourth game, as well, but the Lady Broncos won 26-24.

The state tournament was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Utah Valley University in Orem. Grand was scheduled to take on Region 14 Champion Union in the first round. The winner of that match would play the winner between Emery and Judge Memorial in the championship bracket later Wednesday evening, while the losers would also play each other in the consolation bracket. Each team with at least one win would continue play on Thursday, Oct. 25, possibly culminating in the state title match at 8 p.m.

On Friday, Oct. 26, Grand’s fall postseason continues as the Red Devil football team hosts South Sevier in a 2A quarterfinal game. The Red Devils had a bye for the play-in round after winning the 2A South title with a 4-1 division record. The Rams placed fifth in 2A South and had to travel to Spanish Fork on Thursday, Oct. 18, where they beat the host American Leadership Academy Eagles 55-24, outscoring their opponent 28-0 in the second half behind three rushing touchdowns from Tyson Chisholm, who ran for 425 yards and five touchdowns total.

After his first-round performance, Chisholm leads 2A with 22 rushing touchdowns and 1,768 yards. In comparison, Grand’s Bryant Troutt is second in touchdowns with 12 and third in yards with 772. The Red Devils hosted South Sevier for homecoming on Sept. 14, beating them 34-14. In that game, they held Chisholm to 81 yards and no scores on nine carries.

The Red Devils’ and Rams’ quarterfinal rematch will take place on Friday, Oct. 26, in Moab, at an unusual start time of 5 p.m. This and all state tournament games are UHSAA-ticketed, meaning that only UHSAA passes are valid for entry, not region or school-specific passes. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
